Digital Aerial Photography

To compliment our main geospatial products, particularly LIDAR, Geomatics Group also offers fully orthorectified, high resolution, digital aerial photography. Vertical aerial photography can provide incredible detail and is increasingly being used by both government and commercial businesses to manage the natural and man-made environment.

Our aircraft are equipped with a range of aerial digital cameras, capable of capturing still images up to resolutions of 39 megapixels. Pixel resolution of data from these cameras typically ranges from 10 to 25 cm, depending on the requirements of the survey. Each image is stored with navigation data fed in from the LIDAR system, enabling us to rapidly ortho-rectify with minimal manual input, to exceptionally high levels of accuracy and precision. Individual images are stitched together and colour balanced to produce a seamless mosaic of the whole survey area, ready for input into a GIS.

The images produced by our vertical camera systems are suitable for fine scale mapping for use in:

  • Flood mapping & monitoring
  • Land-use surveys
  • Town planning
  • Archaeological investigation
  • Environmental monitoring

These images may also be draped over digital elevation data from the LIDAR, to create detailed 3D visualisations, particularly powerful for public consultations and communications campaigns.

Colour Infra-red Imagery
Perfect for low cost environmental monitoring, agriculture and forestry, we also offer the ability to capture colour infra-red imagery (CIR). CIR works by picking up the different light wavelengths reflected by all substances, particularly the varying levels of chlorophyll in plants. Subsequent images can then be interpreted to show plant vigour and health, topsoil erosion, pest damage and even flood outlines.
